Memorize New Vocabulary

Today we will learn how to ask and answer the question “How old are you?”. In order to do so we will use the verb mieć, which we just learned in Lesson 14.

 English

Polish

How old are you?

Ile masz lat?

How old is he?

(literally – how many years does he have?)

Ile on ma lat?

He is 5 years old.

(literally – he has 5 years)

On ma pięć lat.

I am 23 years old

Ja mam dwadzieścia trzy lata.

 How old are you ms?

 Ile pani ma lat?

She (ms) is 50 years old.

Pani ma pięćdziesiąt lat.

 Apply It To Sentence Structure

At the beginning it is better to remember the number for your current age then to attempt to learn all numbers 1-100. You can find your age from the list of numbers in the survival Polish section of Language Learning Lab - Numbers.

Years / Year - Lat / Lata / Rok

In Polish, the form meaning "years" is lat or lata. Lata is used whenever a number ends in 2, 3 or 4 (except for 12, 13 & 14). Otherwise we use the form lat.

Examples:

Ona ma dwadzieścia dwa lata.

          She is 22 years old.

On ma dwadzieścia pięć lat.

          He is 25 years old.

The term rok is used only with the number 1 (jeden). If the number finishes with 1, such as 21, 31, 41 etc., we would go back to using the term lat

Examples:

On ma jeden rok.

          He is 1 year old.

BUT:

On ma dwadzieścia jeden lat.

          He is 21 years old.

How much / How many  - Ile

The term ile can be translated for both "how much" or "how many".

When inquring into the age of an individual, the verb mieć (meaning "to have") is used. A literal Polish translation of the question "How old are you?" would be, "How many years do you have?"
