Memorize New Vocabulary

The below chart is a grouping of possessive pronouns. These pronouns are sometimes called possesive adjectives simply because they act as adjectives as their endings change according to the gender of the noun they describe. You will find that many pronouns in Polish are gender specific.

Apply It To Sentence Structure

Don’t worry - it’s not that hard, just take a moment to become familiar. Let’s begin with a very simple example.

If you want to say “This is my book”. The basic word order is the same as in English, there is only one difference. The possessive pronoun is gender specific. The gender of "my" or "your" or "their" must agree with the gender of the noun. Now, the word for book is książka (f), which will match moja. Therefore the sentence will read:

Co to jest?

          To jest moja książka.

What is it?

          This is my book.

Here are some other examples:

Co to jest?

         To jest twój ołówek.

What is it?

          This is your pencil.

Kto to jest?

         To jest jego brat.

Who is it?

         This is his brother.

Kto to jest?

         To jest jej koleżanka.

Who is it?

         This is her friend.

Practice it!

Using the wealth of information you have gained from the last two lessons, you can now put together a description of each of your friends and family members. Using what you have learned, write a sentence that describes one person by telling their name, their relation to you and how old they are.

For example:

1. This is my sister. Her name is Anna. She is 15 years old.

2. This is my firend. His name is John. He is 23 years old.
