Lesson 19

Memorize New Vocabulary

In this lesson we will learn the verb- być (to be). Just like for the verb “mieć” (Lesson 14), we will use our original chart of personal pronouns. However, the verb być (to be) is irregular which basically means that the conjugated form will not resemble its infinitive. Therefore, your best bet is memorization.

Apply It To Sentence Structure

We have already used this verb when we used phrases such as: To jest komputer. (This is a computer). As a reminder, here are some sentences which include this verb:

To jest Basia. Ona jest sympatyczna.

          This is Basia. She is nice.

To jest Jurek. On jest grzeczny.

          This is Jurek. He is well behaved.

To są Marek i Gosia. Marek jest bogaty ale Gosia jest biedna.

         This is Marek and Gosia. Marek is rich but Gosia is poor.

By now you probably know how to use to jest (the third person) to describe people. So try using the first and second person forms.

Ja jestem Jan. Ja jestem przystojny ale leniwy.

          I am Jan. I am handsome but lazy.   

Ja jestem Ola. Ja jestem ładna ale biedna.

          I am Ola. I am pretty but poor.

Ty jesteś Kasia. Ty jesteś bardzo miła.

          You are Kasia. You are very nice.

My jesteśmy Laura i Krzysztof. My jesteśmy pracowici.

         We are Laura and Krzysztof. We are very hard working.
