Lesson 2

Memorize New Vocabulary

In this lesson we will use the same 10 vocabulary words from Lesson 1. Remember that learning the basic vocabulary well, will aid the rest of your language learning experience. Today, we will use these nouns to discuss genders.

Apply It To Sentence Structure

Every noun in the Polish language has a gender. Unlike English, we can define a Polish noun as male, female, or neuter. Based on the vocabulary words we learned in Lesson 1, you already know nouns in each gender.

It is important to know the gender of each noun you use, because it is the gender that will determine how the adjective describing each noun is created. But don't worry, you will see later.

To determine if a noun is masculine, femine or neurter, simply look at the last letter of the word.

Nouns ending in a consonant are masculine, those ending in "a" or "i" are feminine, and those ending in "o" or "e" are neuter.*

Practice It!

Using the simplified chart, determine the gender of each noun you have already learned.

Gender Noun ends with...
Masculine- consonant
Feminine- a or - i
Neuter - o or - e

Mark the correct gender next to each noun. While your at it, write down the meaning of each word in English to show that you have studied your new vocabulary. Afterwords, you can click on the answer key.

Learning genders is usually the first difficultly most language learners come across. This is because the concept of genders does not exist in the English. Therefore, many students find it a place to struggle. However learning genders is not so much a difficult task as it is new.

You’re off to a good start, keep up the good work.
