Memorize New Vocabulary

This lesson will introduce you to Polish occupations. We will start with some common ones just so you will not get too overwhelmed. This vocabulary will be useful for your practice of the Instrumental case.

 Occupation

English

Student

Student

Profesor

 Professor

Nauczyciel

 Teacher

Artysta

 Artist

Lekarz

 Physician

Fryzjer

 Hairdresser

Policjant

 Policeman

Listonosz

 Postman

Sprzedawca

 Retailer

Urzędnik

 Clerk

Apply It To Sentence Structure

As we have already mentioned in Lesson 21, the Instrumental case goes hand in hand with the verb “być”. Therefore, in a sentence such as “I am a student” the noun student will need to be with a correct Instrumental case ending.

Examples:

Ja jestem studentem.

            I am a student (m).

On jest profesorem.

            He is a profesor.

Ty jesteś listonoszem.

            You are a postman.

Feminine Occupations

As you have probably noticed, the table above shows only occupations in the masculine gender. Many occupations have specific equivalents in the feminine gender such as:

Urzędnik – urzędniczka

Sprzedawca - sprzedawczyni

However in most cases you can simply create the feminine occupation out of masculine occupation by adding the suffix –ka.

Examples:

Student – studentka

Policjant - policjantka

If you wanted to say “I am a police woman”, you would change the noun ending into the correct Instrumental case ending:

Examples:

Ja jestem student.

            I am a student. (f)

Ona jest policjant.

            She is a policewoman.

Notice:

There are some exceptions to the gender rule. Artysta (meaning: artist) and sprzedawca (retailer) are masculine even though their endings are –a. In this case, you can use the same Instrumental case endings as if they were feminine.

Examples:

On jest artystą.

            He is an artist.

Ona jest artystką.

            She is an artist.

Practice it!

Now you can add more to the sentences you have been building throughout these pass lessons.

Also, translate the sentences below.

1. This is my sister Anna. She is 15 years old. She is a student.

2. This is his friend Mark. He is very hardworking. He is a policeman.

3. This is our mom Eve. She is nice. She is a teacher.

4. This is her son John. He is 20 years old. He is an artist.
