In this lesson we will add another verb to your vocabulary list. Knowing this verb, along with those studied in Lesson 31 will help you be more confident when getting to know a Polish speaker.

Apply it to Sentence Structure
Zajmować się can mean both “to take care of” and “to be occupied with”. As you can see from the above conjugations, this verb conjugates just like the verbs we learned in Lesson 31. That’s because this verb falls into the category of Conjugation II. However, unlike our previous verbs, this one ads the word:
SIĘ – self
Się is a reflexive particle which attaches to many Polish verbs. This is usually found when the verb reflects a person performing an action. In this case ja zajmuję się can be translated “I myself am occupied with”. You will learn many verbs just like this one later.
In a statement, this particle would most often come after the verb, such as: zajmuję się. However in a question, się would usually come before the verb, such as: się zajmuję. In the end however, either way is correct. The position of się does not change the meaning of the verb. We will discuss this more in Lesson 33.
Note!
This verb is followed with the Instrumental case. This means that any noun or adjective you place after this verb will have to be conjugated according to Instrumental case endings. For a review go to Lesson 21 and Lesson 23. Don’t worry, it’s not as difficult as it sounds.

Ja zajmuję się mamą.
I take care of mom.
On zajmuje się jego synem.
He takes care of his son.
My zajmujemy się pracą.
We are occupied with work.
