Lesson 8

Memorize new vocabulary

It is time to learn how to affirm or negate something. Here are two simple words we can use to do so:

Yes Tak
No Nie

Apply it to sentence structure

If one asks "Czy to jest... ?" (Is this a/an ... ?) you can give a positive response "Tak, to jest..." (Yes, it is a/an ...). In this case you can easily follow the English sentence pattern. Such as:

 Yes-No QuestionAffirming Response

Czy to jest książka?

Tak, to jest książka.

          Is this a book?

          Yes, this is a book.

Czy ten długopis jest zielony?

Tak, ten długopis jest zielony.

          Is this pen green?

          Yes, this pen is green

The Polish term "nie" means "no", "not", or "is not" (isn’t) … Yea, this language really keeps it simple, at least for this part. In order to create negations all you need to do is to add “nie” into your sentence. Take a look at the examples below.

Yes-No QuestionNegating Response

Czy to jest książka?

Nie, to nie jest książka.

          Is this a book?

No, this is not a book.

Czy ten długopis jest zielony?

Nie, ten długopis nie jest zielony.

          Is this pen green?

No, this pen is not green

*Notice that the "nie" comes before the verb "jest", not after.

Here you can see how the Polish term "nie" is an all in one negation for which we would have to use both "no" and "not" in English.

When answering positively, a simple "tak", is suffice, but when giving a negation, the "nie" is used twice, as is illustrated in the above examples.

Practice it!

Now you can answer the questions that you created in Lesson 7. But always keep in mind that whenever you use the term "czy" in a question, the answer is always going to be a yes or no statement.

Write out your practice statements as follows. The more constructions you make, the better chance you have of remembering everything you have learned.

Answer the questions as implied:

1. Czy to jest książka? (+)

2. Czy to jest długopis? (-)

3. Czy to jest biurko? (+)

4. Czy to jest komputer? (-)
